St. Johns County will benefit also Northeast Florida will see thousands of new jobs over the next three to four years as Jacksonville’s port adds a dozen new foreign terminals and deepens its channel to 50 feet, Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown said Monday.
“Today’s economy knows no borders,” Brown said. “We have to work together to close the economic gaps in our region. Northeast Florida has innovation, creativity and opportunity.”
He gave a special presentation to a quarterly breakfast held by St. Johns County’s Economic Development Council, speaking of the benefits an expanded port would bring.
“JaxPort is a $19 billion economic engine that moves 8 million tons of cargo annually, much of it through St. Johns County to Miami,” he said. “Jacksonville is a business city.”
According to Norm Gregory, vice president for economic development for the St. Johns Chamber, this is one of seven North Florida counties that are members of JaxUSA, a trade organization in which all members combine their efforts to attract, retain and expand business in the region.
“We work as a team,” Gregory said. “We’re open for business in St. Johns County.”
The seven counties also form a Foreign Trade Zone, which levies no tariff or customs fees either entering or leaving the zone if a company brings in raw materials and manufactures its product for export.

Gregory said Brown was a “champion” for dredging the port to 50 feet to allow large capacity cargo ships to enter the 14.7 mile ship channel to the last terminal.
“We expect to see jobs, growth and benefit from what’s going on at the port,” Gregory said. “(Port expansion) will affect the entire region. We expect to quadruple (port volume) over the next 10 years.”
He pointed to the Rulon Co. of St. Johns County, which ships its manufactured products in containers to many points around the globe and receives raw materials the same way.
